<image:caption>We now have direct evidence that microplastics are not just passing through the human body; they are accumulating in multiple organs. A post‑mortem study using advanced imaging and spectroscopy detected micro‑ and nanoplastic particles—including polyethylene terephthalate, polystyrene, and polyacrylonitrile—in human brain, thyroid, kidney, liver, heart, skeletal muscle, and lung tissues.[ii] The thyroid, kidney, and brain showed the highest levels, with up to 40.4 microplastic particles per gram of tissue in some samples, confirming organ‑specific accumulation.[ii] A separate Nature Medicine study found microplastics and nanoplastics in human brain, liver, and kidney tissues, with higher proportions in the brain and increasing concentrations in more recent decedents, suggesting rising exposure over time.[vii] A scoping review synthesizing organ data reports microplastics in placenta, lung tissue, blood, stool, and multiple solid organs, and links microplastic‑induced chromosomal damage in human lymphocytes to diseases like infertility, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders.[ix]</image:caption>

<image:caption>It turns out, we are often eating plastic fibers that shed from our clothes. These fibers, too small to be filtered out by wastewater treatment plants, meander into streams and oceans, making their way into the food chain. Several studies have demonstrated the prevalence of this phenomenon. A small study in early 2025 sampling 55 hogsucker fish from seven freshwater streams in Appalachia found microplastic particles in 100% of the fish, with the average fish containing 40 particles. The most troubling statistic? 97% of the plastic particles were fibers from clothing. [ii]</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Healing Power of a Solstice Water Fast - juice transition (days 1-3)</image:title>
<image:caption>The first three days of fasting were extremely pleasant because, well, juice is delicious! Easing into a water fast with juice helps soften what could be a jarring metabolic shift from using glucose to ketones as fuel. Without titrating down the glucose, those first days are pretty awful with lots of headaches, fatigue, and brain fog. Definitely to be avoided! Through the juice days, I felt super energized. I had enough mental stamina to work on my translation of the Dao De Jing and physical vigor to take walks around the property. Being in a tropical location afforded access to fresh, organic juices sourced right from the ecohotel’s grounds. In such oppressive heat and humidity, the fresh, cool juice was a delightful reprieve. By day 3, I felt cool, light, and spiritually awake from the deep dive into Daoist philosophy. My mind was calm and serene. My body was wanting juice less and less and beginning to crave the quiet clarity of water.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Healing Power of a Solstice Water Fast - (a lesson in hydration logistics)</image:title>
<image:caption>At this point, it makes sense to tell you about a pretty significant lesson I learned—choose a location that has ample, flowing, high-quality, potable water. In fact, make that the fundamental priority in determining a location to water fast. Prior to booking, I asked our host if the tap water was potable, making it clear that I do not drink from plastic (too many endocrine disruptors and microplastics). In response, the manager of the ecohotel kindly offered to install a filter so we would be able to drink. Excited and touched, I agreed to this solution. Looking back, I realize I underestimated just how important easy access to high-quality water would be.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Healing Power of a Solstice Water Fast - water fasting (days 4-6)</image:title>
<image:caption>Day 4 was a more difficult transition than I would have liked. I had mental energy, but little physical strength. I found myself struggling to filter water through the GRAYL (a deceptively physically intensive process, even when not fasting!). Tired, I reluctantly decided to trust the water filter and drank 2 liters in the evening. That night, I was awake and nauseated for many hours. In hindsight, this was the point where my 10–14-day goal became infeasible. The morning of day 5, I awoke in a stupor. My stomach was in quite a bit of pain and I was not optimally hydrated. By noon, I decided to order a coconut and drank its contents to get me back on my feet. Thankfully, this did the trick and the rest of day 5 proceeded without any further stomach upset. Fully recovered on day 6, I completed my meditation and breathwork sessions facing the ocean, read, and indulged in some restorative, yin yoga. Toward the evening, I noticed a feeling of hunger and a desire to eat. This is usually my signal that my body is about ready to break fast.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - The Healing Power of a Solstice Water Fast - results</image:title>
<image:caption>Day 1 of fasting, I discontinued all of my Chinese herbs and western medications. After 48 hours—no lie—all signs of inflammation had faded from my skin. I didn’t even wash my face with anything but water during the days of fasting, and everything stayed perfectly clear. Although the rash cleared quickly on the surface, I knew that there were deeper, internal healing processes that were taking place. Autophagy and apoptosis processes were still upregulating and clearing out all of the cells that had been damaged. Biofilms that housed latent pathogens were still weakening, allowing my T-cells and B-cells to finally take out the root problem. The emotional pain of hosting a pathogen that felt stronger than me in such a visible way needed time to soothe. Fasting is a healing that cannot be rushed. Finally, upon waking on day 7, I instinctively knew that the root of my skin concerns had been healed. I broke fast on Sunday, 7/22 and now, 2 weeks later, the pathogen has not returned.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Alcohol and Aging: What the Data (and Dao) Say About Longevity - Alcohol might feel harmless—or even beneficial in small amounts—but research (and about 3,000 years of Chinese medicine) paints a different picture. Here’s how it impacts your system:</image:title>
<image:caption>Cellular Aging Alcohol increases oxidative stress and inflammation, speeding up aging at the cellular level. Think of it like rust forming inside your body—your cells are working overtime to repair the damage. In Chinese medicine, this kind of internal wear and tear is seen as a depletion of your yin and a major source of toxic heat. These both lead to our next point: cancer. Cancer Risk A landmark Lancet study concluded that there’s no safe level of alcohol when it comes to cancer. Even light drinking increases your risk for breast, liver, and colorectal cancers. Dr. David Nutt explains that alcohol becomes acetaldehyde—a toxic byproduct that damages DNA and nudges cells toward mutation. Or in Chinese medicine terms: that toxic heat damages your body at the level of the jing—your foundational, vital essence. Once depleted, its tough to rebuild. Brain Health Even moderate drinking shrinks areas of the brain responsible for memory and decision-making. Translation: your daily inner sage gets a little fuzzier, for the long haul. In Eastern terms, alcohol clouds the shen, which resides in the heart and governs clarity, consciousness, and spiritual connection. Sobriety doesn’t just protect your neurons—it polishes the mirror of your awareness. Heart Health Red wine might have PR people, but the Lancet study says any protective effects are overshadowed by the increased risk of other diseases, like liver dysfunction and cancer. Your Heart in Chinese medicine is more than a pump—it houses your spirit. Alcohol might “loosen you up,” but it can also disconnect you from yourself and others. Sleep Disruption Alcohol interferes with deep REM sleep—the kind your body needs to restore, repair, and regenerate. So even if you log eight hours, you’ll likely wake up foggy and depleted. Fun fact: in Chinese medicine, your Liver is responsible for smooth emotional flow and restful sleep. Alcohol taxes the Liver, leading to middle-of-the-night wake-ups, restlessness, and—yep—grumpiness.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Alcohol and Aging: What the Data (and Dao) Say About Longevity - Alcohol and Longevity: The Hard Truth</image:title>
<image:caption>If you’re serious about living longer, cutting back on alcohol—or quitting entirely—is one of the most impactful changes you can make. Consider these stats: According to *The Lancet*, alcohol was responsible for 3 million deaths globally in 2016 alone[8]. The U.S. Surgeon General reports that alcohol-related cancers shorten lives by an average of 15 years[7]. Even one drink per day increases the risk of breast cancer by 10% and mouth cancer by 40%, compared to non-drinkers[7]. The bottom line? While alcohol might feel like a small indulgence, its long-term risks add up quickly.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Find Your Mocktail Mojo (cannabinoids, for the win!) Gone are the days of sad club soda with lime. Today’s non-alcoholic drinks are legit: think botanical elixirs, adaptogenic blends, and yes—hemp-derived cannabinoids that help you relax without numbing out. You can still vibe with the party, just minus the cellular chaos and next-day fog. Rethink The Rituals Fun doesn’t have to come with a side of hangover. Host a dinner, plan a sunrise hike, throw a board game night, or meet up for matcha. You don’t need booze to bond—you just need presence (and maybe some good snacks). Be Real About Your Why You don’t have to explain yourself to anyone—but when you do share why you’re drinking less (clearer mind, better sleep, deeper connection), you might just give someone else permission to do the same. That’s leadership, baby. Own It Like A Legend Sobriety isn’t lame—it’s next-level. Choosing clarity in a culture that glorifies escape? That’s not boring, that’s revolutionary. And you don’t have to shout it from the rooftops (unless you want to)—just walk your walk, and let your glow do the talking.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Featured Herb: Dang Gui 當歸 (Angelica sinensis) - A Historical Herb Rooted in Culture</image:title>
<image:caption>Dāng guī has deep roots in Chinese cultural and medical practices, with its use documented as far back as 2,000 years ago in the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing (The Divine Farmer’s Materia Medica). Traditionally, it was used to address blood-related concerns, ease pain, and support postpartum recovery. There is a famous legend about the herb dāng guī that highlights its significance in Chinese culture. The story tells of a young couple who were separated when the husband left to gather medicinal herbs in the mountains, facing great danger to prove his courage. He promised to return within three years, and if he didn’t, his wife was to assume he was lost or dead and remarry. After three years, the husband had not returned, and the wife remarried. Shortly after, he came back, and both were heartbroken. He gave her the herbs he collected as a token of his love. Overcome with grief, the woman fell ill and her monthly cycle became painful and irregular. One day, she remembered the herbs her love had gifted her. She took a large dose of them, intending to poison herself and end her life. Instead, the herbs restored her strength and vitality, regulating her cycle. Dāng guī receives its name from this legend. 當 dāng has a broad array of applications, ultimately conveying the idea of timeliness and taking responsibility. Some examples include "to undertake," "should," and "now." 歸 guī illustrates the ideas of returning, belonging, and coming together. One of its literal meanings is "marry." Thus, the herb was named dāng guī, meaning "time to return," symbolizing not only the longing between the two lovers, but also the herb’s remarkable healing power to revitalize ones health.</image:caption>
